At Somerfield, I am responsible for all our own label lines. In the UK I can source product to farm assurance standards. As I look at products sourced from outside the UK, I want to deliver similar standards of farm assurance. Currently my team have to assess schemes for different products in each different country - this is not cost effective. This is especially the case with ingredients used in own label. I am an confident I will be able to deliver complete supply chain farm assurance through EurepGAP.

I have been very active for many years in the fruit and vegetable grower cooperatives in Belgium. I am chairman of the board of the fruit and vegetable cooperative BRAVA cvba and member of the Board of LAVA (owner Flandria) and VBT which represent the economic and political interests of the Belgian fruit and vegetable cooperatives and their producer members. I was one of the founders, and still board member of the Flandria label. My job as a professor in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Leuven has given me the opportunity to network with growers and specialists worldwide, not only for fruit and vegetables but also for most field crops as well as for animal production. |

As a farmer´s son with an agricultural education, the integrated approach in agriculture was for me always a central issue. Working in four different countries in the Southern Hemisphere during 13 years, I had the opportunity to become a specialist in ecosystems, agro forestry, research and extension for the primary production. During 10 years I was part of the Migros program team for integrated production called Migros-Sano. This program has become the base of the IP-programs within the Swiss agriculture. Since 2002 I an in charge of the implementation of the EurepGAP standard for Migros. Since the 1st May 2005 I am in charge of the sector "standards and social compliance" within the Migros community, including our in-house manufacturers. This includes standards for primary production, food safety in transforming industry, social standard, etc. |
